Our School Pets
/in Blog/by ZaraAt Buttercups we like to bring learning to life so we keep a range of pets – a lizard, a chameleon…even fish!
Our pets have recently moved home. Pascal the chameleon has been handed over to a local reptile store . Our chickens fluffy and chips have now retired. They have been moved to our ks1 teachers house Mrs Nur who has kindly built them a wooden house in the garden. They have settled in well.
We are now thinking of bringing in some crickets ! This will be interesting!
Enterprise Week
/in Blog, News/by ZaraThis week It all added up for our young entrepreneurs who found themselves swapping the classroom for the boardroom, as they entered ‘The Dragons Den’ with their pitches .Every class from nursery to Year Six, was asked to set up a mini-business. The youngsters were given the task of thinking of every detail, from business ideas to the running costs.Teachers came up with the enterprise week idea to encourage children to use their maths skills.
The children’s ideas included making and selling fridge magnets, Gruffalo biscuits, Fairtrade goods, gingerbread men, luxury chocolates, cakes , pizzas milkshakes and wacky jelly! The school was transformed into a bustling market place in which children sold their wares to parents and staff.
All the pupils worked with excitement and enthusiasm from start to finish . The project enabled them to improve their mental maths and written calculation skills, as well as having a greater understanding of how a business works.
We are very grateful to local businesses including Savera bakery, Fountain delights, who supported the school and the children throughout the project. The week ended with a math production by hobgoblins theatre company.

Visit to the Globe Theatre
/in Blog/by ZaraChildren at Buttercup have immersed themselves into the language of Shakespeare through his story of King Lear and embracing the true beauty of literature.
During this learning process children gained a deeper understanding of family dynamics and also concepts such as the significance of inheritancein Islam ;the concept of dowry and kingship. Children re-wrote the play scripts with thier own plots and also visited the globe theatre, which contextualised their learning and deep end thier understanding of the the time in which Shakespeare wrote.
Children indulged in a question and answer session asking about Shakespeare life. The guide was very impressed by Buttercup. We then had a tour of the theatre and the children were amazed at the open theatre setting.

Trip to the Royal Observatory
/in Blog, News/by ZaraChildren in year 5 and 6 went to the world’s centre of time as they visited the Royal Observatory to explore the significance of establishing the longitude. Children shared pivotal moments with their peers on the Meridian line as they stood aside the eastern and western hemisphere. Children also discovered how significant the sense of direction was to Muslims as Islam spread and the need to face the Qibla became a scientific geographic inquiry. They discovered how the British government had encouraged the community to find the best solution to invent a mechanism to establish the longitude for sailors who went put to sea. Children also enjoyed the show at the Planetarium which contextualised children’s learning of Earth and Space which was a wonderful way to end the term.

Year 6 graduation ceremony 2014
/in Blog, News/by ZaraThey conquer their fears, achieve ambitious goals and learn to act with enormous amounts of integrity. The staff at Buttercup Primary School are always very proud of the children and the achievements they have made; personally, socially, spiritually and academically. It’s because of this that the children have their own opportunity to celebrate all of their achievements with their families and teachers before their transition to Secondary School.
The children sing songs of farewell and some choose to read a poem, famous readings and their own letters of thanks.
It has been a very moving celebration full of emotions of happiness and sadness.
The staff consider our graduation to be a short goodbye as we know that the children will soon return to let us know how they are getting on at Secondary School and we will see them at breakfast club or even work experience opportunities in the future in’sha’Allah.
