Year 5 & 6 Cambridge University Visit – 13th July 2017

This week Year 5 & 6  had the opportunity to visit Cambridge, one of Britain’s most famous universities. Cambridge University is home to over 18,000 students and each student is placed in one of the 31 colleges. We visited Clare College. We found out that  took over 200 years to build! It was completed under the reign of King Henry VIII. We learnt that university students don’t have a school day like we do, instead students have to control their own timetable and are responsible for making sure their work is completed. When you go to  university, you choose one subject to study!

It was wonderful to be able to walk through buildings and experience an exclusive seminar on Earth’s History delivered by Nigel Woodcock  where students have been taught for over 800 years. The trip has inspired the class to consider their  aspirations and what they want to achieve in their lives. Everyone enjoyed the day!

here are the highlights !

International Week at Buttercup Primary school 22nd-25th May 2017‎

At Buttercup primary, we celebrated International Week. Every class was allocated a country that  the school councillors had chosen. The countries chosen were, Somalia , Algeria and Bangladesh this year. Early Years celebrated more than one country. Everyone had a busy week painting different flags, looking at artefacts, currency, and had the opportunity to learn about their country in depth. Each class shared their new-found knowledge in a presentation to the whole school assembly. The school Chef catered lunchtime meals reflecting each of the countries, we had Samboosa , Akhni Handesh, Halwa  and many many more delicious healthy international meals that week. It was absolutely scrumptious! we ended the week with an international food fair. We celebrated the fact that diversity is the one true thing we all have in common!

Young Writers Award

A very big congratulations to Mehak in Year 5 and Saira in Year 6 for winning the ‘Young writers’ competition and getting their stories published in the ‘Crazy creatures-London’ book. The mini sagas were entered into the competition by their teacher and the stories were chosen out of hundreds of entries. The stories were selected based on the children’s expressions of imagination, use of language and creativity. We are very proud of our students and hope they continue to flourish in their writing.

Science week

Alhumdulillah Science Week was a great success! Over the week, the children learned about the different aspects of Chemistry, Biology and Physics. They took part in different experiments and have had so much fun learning new ideas. Dressing up day was also a great success. Bike training

Cycling has many benefits; health and wellbeing, environmental, social and economic. It is an inclusive, empowering, inexpensive activity that is accessible to everyone.“The benefits of cycling run much deeper than balance sheets or carbon footprints. It’s a crucial life skill, giving children an early road sense as they take their first steps towards independence. As well as offering easy, exhilarating exercise, it also helps young people develop what psychologists call resilience – the crucial ability to assess and navigate through risk.

At Buttercup our Whole School Cycling Project aims to provide opportunities for the whole school community to experience structured, useful cycling that will benefit them practically. Through the project we offer cycle training for all Key Stage 2 pupils, following the Bikeability syllabus:

Level One training for all KS2 pupils, equipping pupils with the skills necessary to ride safely off the road.

Level Two training for years 5 and 6, enabling pupils to ride safely on quiet roadsand make decisions as to their road positions, communication with and awareness of other road users.

All training is provided by fully accredited National Standards cycle instructors. We also offer cycle training (following the same structure) for all teaching and support staff.

Buttercup  has successfully bid for a selection of pool of bikes which are available to the whole school, including 15 pupil bike, two staff bikes . We also have secure, weather-proof cycle storage for all pupils, staff and visitors cycling to school.

As well as the Key Stage 2 cycle training we also:

  • run a weekly after school cycling club
  • hold termly Dr. Bike surgeries which provide maintenance and upkeep of bikes belonging to the school, staff, pupils and their families, as well as an annual adult bike maintenance workshop for the wider comunity.
  • run regular instructor led cycle rides for pupils and their parents & carers around the local area.

Parliament Visit – 8th November 2016

Year 5 & 6 visited The Houses of Parliament on the 8th of November 2016. They learnt about the creation of parliament and how the monarchy gave up power of making certain decisions. Also, they looked at how members of the parliament voted for new laws to be passed and the voting system that was used by the MPs. Moreover, they learnt about the different

constituencies around England and how only one

person (MP) represents that area. The children had a wonderful experience touring the parliament building, they even got to see Queen Victoria’s throne!

Sleeping Rough Project with the Salvation Army

10 children from Buttercup primary school will be swapping their beds for ‘sleeping rough’ to raise funds for a new scheme aimed at helping the homeless.

The Year 5/ 6 pupils  are bedding down in sleeping bags in the school hall in April for one night to get a taste of what it’s like to be homeless.

The sponsor money raised will go to the Salvation Army Project who  provide homeless young people aged between 16 and 25 with free, safe and secure emergency temporary accommodation.

To make Buttercup’s homeless experience as real as possible, heating in the school is being turned off,  local warehouses are supplying cardboard boxes as bedding and bread and water will be the only food on offer. As well as raising money for a very worthwhile cause, this is a great way for the children to explore issues around how people become homeless – often through no fault of their own  – the children will get an idea about how it feels not to have a comfy bed and home at night , and how this is a reality for many not only nationwide but globally.

Katy Hillary started the ball rolling with an interesting school assembly on Thursday 7th January 2016. This gave the children a head start into understanding the real issues some people in Britain are facing today and that having no home is not just an problem one may encounter internationally but may perhaps be near your doorstep.

The children and staff will plan the weeks ahead for attempting to address some of the issues.

Eco Boat trip Years 5/6 : Hermitage, Tower Hill : 12th October 2016

The children in Year 5/6 enjoyed the day out by the river, packed full of hands-on learning which links into the KS2 curriculum for science, geography, design & technology. They also had the opportunity to learn about the history of the river Thames and explore the  historic Dutch barge.  Children spent  the day as scientists  observing the urban river environment . They worked in teams to test the water for pollutants, their data  was then uploaded onto an online database for scientists, policy makers and academics to use to assess the health of the Thames: Freshwater Watch. They all explored the boat, water,  and explored further in depth as energy and waste detectives. Children got to learn and understand about local and international green inventors and exciting eco technologies of the future. The class split into teams where they used all of their learning from the day  to design their very own Eco Boat, and  presented  their finished designs to the class!   Everyone had a memorable learning experience by the Thames, and have been inspired to be the next generation of green inventors safeguarding  the health of the Thames for generations to come!   Here are the highlights…..
