Year 5 trip to The Royal society of Chemistry

‘1001 Science Journeys from Alchemy to Chemistry’ event

The Year 5 children had an amazing day at the Royal Society of Chemistry where they watched a live show about the famous Jabir ibn Hayyan and his successor, Muhammad ibn Zakariya al-Razi, who developed new ways of classifying substances and organising chemical knowledge.  They then took part in 4 different workshops where they got the opportunity to make soap, test liquids to classify if they are alkaline or acidic amongst others. The children left feeling excited and inspired by how amazing Science can be.

KS1 Trip to Discover Story Centre

On the 28th November 2019, KS1 took a trip to the Discover Children’s Story Centre in Stratford as part of their story-writing topic in English. They enjoyed dressing up as different characters and creating their very own stories with their friends.

Maths week KS1

During Maths Week, KS1 used their knowledge of various mathematical concepts to create gingerbread bears to sell in the food fair. They also enjoyed playing maths games with their friends and being able to apply their learning to real-life situations.

Pizza making in Year 5 and 6

During Maths week, the year 5 & 6 were using estimation to solve real life problems. They learnt the approximations of different weights and capacities to enable them to estimate the amount for each ingredient before actually measuring them. The question is how close were they in their estimations and how yummy were their pizzas?

Maths week

As part of Maths week, ‘Maths is everywhere,’ Year 3 & 4 learnt about ‘Data Handling.’ Their lessons revolved around real life Maths based activities where they conducted a survey on sweets and collected and gathered data from around the school, to find out which sweets were most popular amongst the students and which were least favoured. They then converted the data into tally charts and bar graphs.  They used their knowledge of collecting and handling data by participating in the school fair in which they engaged in making sweet cones to sell. This also gave them the opportunity to experience market research and profit margins.

Maths hat competition– Maths week

We celebrated the end of Maths week with a bang! The children were invited to take part in a Maths hat competition to design and make their own hat inspired by the Maths topics they have been learning at school. We saw shape hats, number hats, time hats, weighing hats amongst others. We were really impressed with the creativity and enthusiasm that was put into the designs. A very well done to all the children who entered the competition!

Maths week– Food sale

Each class worked on a topic for Maths week. As a result of the learning, each class produced different food items to be sold in the food fair. Early years made fruit kebabs, Yr 1 and 2 made ginger bread cookies, Year 3 and 4 made sweet cones and Yr 5 and 6 made pizza. We had a great turn out and sold everything! A very well done to all that were involved.

Anti-Bullying Week KS1

For anti-bullying week KS1 did a variety of activities in order to understand how children can choose kindness in any and every case. Our main focus has been to see how change starts within ourselves and how our own actions have a knock-on effect on how we interact with others. Some of these activities included: promoting kindness through fruit sharing during snack time, differentiating between friendly and unfriendly actions amongst peers, and using one of the 99 names of Allah, Al-Muqsit, to see how Islam promotes kindness and fairness between everyone.

Trip to the William Morris Gallery

Year 5 & 6 had a fantastic time at the William Morris Gallery, learning about creating patterns through block printing as the famous British artist William Morris from Walthamstow once did. In DT the children have been exploring textiles and patterns which has enabled them to now create their own patterns on accessories as part of their topic.

Choose Kindness anti bullying day at Buttercup Primary school

For anti bullying day we invited the children to show an act of kindness by bringing an extra piece of fruit to share with their class. We had an overwhelming response and ended up having a fruit party in every class! The children watched videos about anti bullying week and discussed ways in which we can tackle bullying. We all agreed that kindness overcomes all barriers and there should be more kindness in the world and no bullying!

Year 3 and 4 nature walk in Swedenborg gardens

The Year 3 & 4  took part in a nature walk in Swedenborg Gardens with a local organisation (Nature and US). The children had a short talk with the leaders and then began their walk. They discovered various insects such as ladybirds, spiders and worms. They found out that all male spiders die in the winter but most females survive! They also observed various plants such as goose grass and dandelions. The children also used magnifying glasses to examine the small hairs on the leaves.  They were excited to see wild lettuce and wild carrots, spotted different birds and learnt which nest belong to which bird.  Overall, the trip was a great success and the children were able to make links  with their science topic.

Guess what I am?

Guess what I am?

My home is the bottom of someone’s meaningful heart.

Born from the thought of someone’s pondering brain.

Begun from someone’s lyrical words.

And then formed from a writers enchanted pen, I came.

Guess what I am?

From the top of the Azure sea.

To the bottom of someone’s soft heart.

Travelling the world North to South.

I can be recited from one’s mouth.

Guess what I am?

Altering from the deep ocean to dry land.

Deep memories I could deliver.

Meanings that will touch your heart.

Or break it all apart.

Guess what I am?

We are all different… but the same.

Some full of love, some full of shame.

We can represent something sad.

Or something you might have had.

Guess what I am?

Some can show feeling.

Others can show meaning.

Guess what I am?

I am a poem.

By Adibah Azad

I am a poem

I am a poem,

sitting in an author’s creative mind,

being written gradually on paper,

ready to be read by people.

Different people read me,

I can see that they are rapidly learning new things,

which makes me feel valued,

and I feel as though I have a purpose.

I provide knowledge to the world and plant new ideas into their brains.

Scratch, scratch is what I hear as my master carefully adds to me,

how great it is to be, a poem like me.

Kent Owls Academy

The Early Years foundation stage had  special visitors, the owls from the Kent owls academy. We had an exciting time observing them fly silently in our classroom. We learnt many interesting facts about them, and we also had a chance to hold them and feel them too!too.Have a look.

Able writers workshop with Neal Zetter

Two of our children from Year 6 were lucky enough to take part in a special workshop run by a leading performance poet, Neal Zetter. They got the opportunity to write their own poems and perform poetry with a group. Neal inspired children to use their imaginations and use creative language to express themselves through words. The children performed with other primary schools  and shared ideas together. It was a very motivating and challenging day enjoyed by all.

Celebrating end of term achievements

This term we have been encouraging children to become confident public speakers. Every Friday, The boys  and girls in upper key stage 2 have the opportunity to take part in performing the Kuthba (For public proclaiming in the Islamic tradition) for the boys, and Naseeha  (Giving advice )for the girls.

Children are encouraged to plan and write down what they want to share with the congregation. They have to work on projecting their voices and getting their message across with clarity. We are pleased to say that this kind of public speaking has made a positive impact on the confidence of the children and we hope to continue to support this initiative.

We have been encouraging the upper and lower KS 2 boys to perform the Adhaan (Call to pray) at Dhuhur time.  This practice has really made an impact on the confidence  of these boys as they have had to stand in front of everyone and perform the Adhaan in Arabic using the correct techniques of pronunciation . We have seen  so much enthusiasm amongst the boys  who want to have a go and participate.

Pioneering Personality – My mother

For pioneering personalities week the Early Years focused on the importance of mothers. We organised workshops where the mums were invited to come in and spend time doing arts and crafts with their children. The children learnt the ‘Mother’ nasheed and sang it to their beautiful mothers. It was a wonderful sight to see!

Pioneering Personalities week special assembly

We ended the week with an amazing assembly where children from each class presented their pioneering personality. The children highlighted key facts about the lives of these special people and show cased their fantastic art work . Well done to all the children for putting so much effort into this week.

Pioneering Personalities week– Mohammed Ali

The children in Year 3 and 4 designed there own posters, fact sheets, art work and power point presentations to share with the class. They did their own research about Mohammed Ali and talked about the impact he had as a Muslim on the boxing sport. They shared some of his famous quotes like ‘Fly like a butterfly and sting like a bee’ and got to know him as a pioneering personality!
