Money Week

Monday 23rd November  saw the beginning of an exciting money week at Buttercup Primary School. Everybody got involved in all kinds of activities. Key Stage 1 learned all about coins, counting money, shopping, prices and played a range of games, even taking part in a money treasure hunt. Key Stage 2 classes extended their experience to other currencies and exchange rates. They explored needs and wants, what we use money for and whether it makes us happy. Some children created pocket money policies considering whether children should be given pocket money, how much, whether to spend or save and if it should be earned – these make interesting reading! Others also investigated bank accounts, and the range of ways to pay for things: cheques, credit and debit cards or even simply with a mobile phones.

A group of Year 5 and 6 embarked upon an enterprise challenge. At the very exclusive UBS bank in the city of London .

Everybody took part in  Maths Hat competition, we had an interesting collection that was showcased!

We will be working in partnership with schools and businesses such as Santander, IBM, BT, Hamleys, BirminghamUniversity, Virgin Active, London Business School. Enterprise will become a core part of the school experience through special projects, trips and Challenge days.
Enterprise Skills are communicated widely with children so that they can identify their own progress in each skill:

Working in a team
Leading
Listening carefully
Sharing ideas
Problem-solving
Using imagination
Staying positive
Aiming high

*Participation in Enabling Enterprise has will Insha’allah have a great impact on pupils at Buttercup primary school.

Our School Pets

At Buttercups we like to bring learning to life so we keep a range of pets – a lizard, a chameleon…even fish!

Our pets have recently moved home. Pascal the chameleon has been handed over to a local reptile store . Our chickens fluffy and chips have now retired. They have been moved to our ks1 teachers house Mrs Nur who has kindly built them a wooden house in the garden. They have settled in well.

We are now thinking of bringing in some crickets ! This will be interesting!

Enterprise Week

This week It all added up for our young entrepreneurs who found themselves swapping the classroom for the boardroom, as they entered ‘The Dragons Den’ with their pitches .Every class from nursery to Year Six, was asked to set up a mini-business. The youngsters were given the task of thinking of every detail, from business ideas to the running costs.Teachers came up with the enterprise week idea to encourage children to use their maths skills.

The children’s ideas included making and selling fridge magnets, Gruffalo biscuits, Fairtrade goods, gingerbread men, luxury chocolates, cakes , pizzas milkshakes and wacky jelly! The school was transformed into a bustling market place in which children sold their wares to parents and staff.

All the pupils worked with excitement and enthusiasm from start to finish . The project enabled them to improve their mental maths and written calculation skills, as well as having a greater understanding of how a business works.

We are very grateful to local businesses including Savera bakery, Fountain delights, who supported the school and the children throughout the project. The week ended with a math production by hobgoblins theatre company.
Here are the highlights ….

Visit to the Globe Theatre

Children at Buttercup have immersed themselves into the language of Shakespeare through his story of King Lear and embracing the true beauty of literature.
During this learning process children gained a deeper understanding of family dynamics and also concepts such as the significance of inheritancein Islam ;the concept of dowry and kingship. Children re-wrote the play scripts with thier own plots and also visited the globe theatre, which contextualised their learning and deep end thier understanding of the the time in which Shakespeare wrote.
Children indulged in a question and answer session asking about Shakespeare life. The guide was very impressed by Buttercup. We then had a tour of the theatre and the children were amazed at the open theatre setting.

Here are some of the highlights of the day….

The children in year 5/6 visited the Mill House in Bromley by Bow as part of their science, design and Technology learning .This term children analysed the significance of renewable energy and weather it is a long term solution in London alongside the production of bread from grain to flour. This trip enabled the children to physically experience the life of a Miller where they followed the trail of a grain churned into flour through the process of renewable energy by means of the water Mill.

E-safety Day

Kids live in a digital world, children in BCP were taught how to protect themselves and think critically as we want our children to be smart and safe in the digital world – whether that is in school or out of school – having them understand how the technology works, how copyright works, how identity works.
