Maths Week -27th November to 1st December 2017

This Year during maths week everyone at Buttercup had been planning on a spectacular maths event. From hats competition to projects!

The Early years unit explored the ocean ,counted fish and learnt about the different size and weight of sea life creatures that exist under water.

Ks1 and Ks2 took part in an event that covered a mixture of Dragon’s den, and the Apprentice. The children were divided into groups to present a pitch to the Dragons in a bid to gain some money for their investment for which they believed would bring in a lot of profit from the enterprise day on Friday.

The children learnt to work together to research, market and sell a product to the staff, parents and pupils  in order to make the most amount of money possible . The winning team was the team who made the most money from the Apprentice sale as well as the team who managed to gain the most investments from the Dragons.

All the money made by the teams will go towards new maths resources for the school.

This years math week was aimed and designed to teach the children new skills in enterprise and extend their mathematical abilities. During this week the children had the chance to :

–  take on a particular role/responsibility within the group, which include; Project manager, Finance Manager, Marketing Executive, Chief buyer and Presentation Co-ordinator

– Conduct market research and use their findings to identify their product

– Set budgets and create spreadsheets for costs; calculate their total expenditure, ensuring they keep within their budget

– Organise a marketing campaign and advertising

– Sell a product and enhance their sales through their selling strategies,

promotions and marketing

– Develop problem solving and communication skills

– Create and present a presentation about their project

The teams held a successful presentation on Wednesday to convince all three dragons of their product . The Dragons held a total of £60 .

Throughout the week the children have shown real enthusiasm exploring and learning maths in  everyday situations and have already shown great entrepreneurial abilities and creative ideas. There are many Alan Sugars in the making here at Buttercup! We can’t wait for next years event!

THEO’s visit to Buttercup

Tower Hamlets Enforcement Officers (THEO’s) made two visits to the Buttercup Primary School on Cannon Street Road last week in efforts to reach out to the younger community, amid a planned ‘Safety Week.’

Deputy head teacher Shaheda Khanom contacted Tower Hamlets Council for assistance and requested Enforcement Officers conduct a planned assembly in efforts to raise awareness to the youngsters in the school, in relation to Road Safety, Stranger danger and the new threat of Cyber Security and staying safe online.

THEOs visited the school on two separate days where they were able to interact with the children and even allow many to practise staying safe using the Official Radio to connect with the live CCTV control room.

The event was a success, staff at the Buttercup School stated that the children had a great experience and had been talking about the assembly all week.

Tower Hamlets Enforcement Officers were also impressed with the existing knowledge of the children regarding the issues around safety during the presentation. The Officers was really impressed stating that the school must be doing something correct!

In all it was a very good initiative, and as a result The THEO service now plans on doing more events with other schools across the borough in the near future.

Year 5 & 6 Cambridge University Visit – 13th July 2017

This week Year 5 & 6  had the opportunity to visit Cambridge, one of Britain’s most famous universities. Cambridge University is home to over 18,000 students and each student is placed in one of the 31 colleges. We visited Clare College. We found out that  took over 200 years to build! It was completed under the reign of King Henry VIII. We learnt that university students don’t have a school day like we do, instead students have to control their own timetable and are responsible for making sure their work is completed. When you go to  university, you choose one subject to study!

It was wonderful to be able to walk through buildings and experience an exclusive seminar on Earth’s History delivered by Nigel Woodcock  where students have been taught for over 800 years. The trip has inspired the class to consider their  aspirations and what they want to achieve in their lives. Everyone enjoyed the day!

here are the highlights !

International Week at Buttercup Primary school 22nd-25th May 2017‎

At Buttercup primary, we celebrated International Week. Every class was allocated a country that  the school councillors had chosen. The countries chosen were, Somalia , Algeria and Bangladesh this year. Early Years celebrated more than one country. Everyone had a busy week painting different flags, looking at artefacts, currency, and had the opportunity to learn about their country in depth. Each class shared their new-found knowledge in a presentation to the whole school assembly. The school Chef catered lunchtime meals reflecting each of the countries, we had Samboosa , Akhni Handesh, Halwa  and many many more delicious healthy international meals that week. It was absolutely scrumptious! we ended the week with an international food fair. We celebrated the fact that diversity is the one true thing we all have in common!

Young Writers Award

A very big congratulations to Mehak in Year 5 and Saira in Year 6 for winning the ‘Young writers’ competition and getting their stories published in the ‘Crazy creatures-London’ book. The mini sagas were entered into the competition by their teacher and the stories were chosen out of hundreds of entries. The stories were selected based on the children’s expressions of imagination, use of language and creativity. We are very proud of our students and hope they continue to flourish in their writing.

Bike training

Cycling has many benefits; health and wellbeing, environmental, social and economic. It is an inclusive, empowering, inexpensive activity that is accessible to everyone.“The benefits of cycling run much deeper than balance sheets or carbon footprints. It’s a crucial life skill, giving children an early road sense as they take their first steps towards independence. As well as offering easy, exhilarating exercise, it also helps young people develop what psychologists call resilience – the crucial ability to assess and navigate through risk.

At Buttercup our Whole School Cycling Project aims to provide opportunities for the whole school community to experience structured, useful cycling that will benefit them practically. Through the project we offer cycle training for all Key Stage 2 pupils, following the Bikeability syllabus:

Level One training for all KS2 pupils, equipping pupils with the skills necessary to ride safely off the road.

Level Two training for years 5 and 6, enabling pupils to ride safely on quiet roadsand make decisions as to their road positions, communication with and awareness of other road users.

All training is provided by fully accredited National Standards cycle instructors. We also offer cycle training (following the same structure) for all teaching and support staff.

Buttercup  has successfully bid for a selection of pool of bikes which are available to the whole school, including 15 pupil bike, two staff bikes . We also have secure, weather-proof cycle storage for all pupils, staff and visitors cycling to school.

As well as the Key Stage 2 cycle training we also:

  • run a weekly after school cycling club
  • hold termly Dr. Bike surgeries which provide maintenance and upkeep of bikes belonging to the school, staff, pupils and their families, as well as an annual adult bike maintenance workshop for the wider comunity.
  • run regular instructor led cycle rides for pupils and their parents & carers around the local area.
