Book week

The children of Buttercup Primary school have been busy this week with activities to do with Book Week.

The Travellors book company hosted our book fair , each day the book fair was opened to encourage everyone to buy their favourite books!

All week and throughout the day we had Stop, Drop and Read as the bell rang throughout the school to signal this event. Reading break time was carried out in the main hall as an alternative to playing outside and the Big Book

Parents were invited to join this week during storytelling session. Folk stories and stories were read out in different languages.

Many more activities from design a book marker competition were also held. The teachers swapped classes throughout the week and took their favourite children’s book with them to read to the children.

On Wednesday we welcomed Jackie Marchant, children’s author. Jackie was involved in delivering workshops with each classes on how to write an imaginative story.

The whole school participated by having everyone dressing up as their favourite book character ,the day finished with book signings with Jackie with parents and families.

Trip to the Royal Observatory

Children in year 5 and 6 went to the world’s centre of time as they visited the Royal Observatory to explore the significance of establishing the longitude. Children shared pivotal moments with their peers on the Meridian line as they stood aside the eastern and western hemisphere. Children also discovered how significant the sense of direction was to Muslims as Islam spread and the need to face the Qibla became a scientific geographic inquiry. They discovered how the British government had encouraged the community to find the best solution to invent a mechanism to establish the longitude for sailors who went put to sea. Children also enjoyed the show at the Planetarium which contextualised children’s learning of Earth and Space which was a wonderful way to end the term.

Islam Awareness Week Exhibition

Islam awareness week this year was around the topic ‘who is Muhammed (saw)’

A 2 day Exhibition displaying models of the two holy mosques and artefact from the past was held on show for the public.
A variety show of nasheeds recitation of the Quran and drama performances was also on show by the children of Buttercups! It was a great week!
