KS1 International week

KS1 loved International week! This is always a wonderful theme week to discover a new country or a learn a great deal about a country we already know. This week also allowed us to celebrate our cultural differences and shared similarities and values. We explored the country of Bangladesh! we found out fascinating rich history from this South Asian small country surrounded by territories. We discovered that Bangladesh fought very hard to establish their own language ‘Bangla’. A lot of lives where lost in the fight for this and this is represented by the red circle in the flag. The green represents the beautiful lush green fertile land.  During DT we learnt about the significance of fish in the culture, we particularly learnt about the national fish called ‘Ilish’.

International week assembly at Buttercup Primary

To end the week, a special assembly was organised, where each class presented new information about the country they learnt about. They shared facts, artefacts, languages and  art work that they worked on over the week and for homework. We celebrated similarities and differences in the most perfect way and took away new knowledge that will help us have understand and respect other cultures even more.

Tower Hamlets Linking project first meet up with our partner school, Lansbury Lawrence primary school

The Year 5 and 6 children have been involved in a special project with a Year 6 class from Lansbury Lawrence primary school. They have been finding out about each others schools and writing to each other. On Monday 18th March, they finally met  at the Rich Mix Centre where they  played games and took part in activities that made them get to know each other more. They found out that they had a lot in common with one another and cannot wait to visit each others schools in the near future!

Visit to the New Zealand Embassy

Our children visited the New Zealand embassy for a private event  on Friday 22nd March. They took messages of love and solidarity together. The children read out messages, sang nasheeds and recited Qur’an to the team. The children were given a wonderful surprise by the Embassy staff who sang to our children too. It was an emotional event with lots of tears. Well done to the children for displaying confidence and compassion at the event.

Year 3 and 4 trip to Kew Gardens

Year 3 and 4 visited Kew Gardens as part of their science topic on how plants grow as well as our current Topic subject on Where does our food come from? The children had an amazing time and had an unforgettable experience seeing plants and trees they have never seen before including some of the rarest plants in the world. The children were very inspired by one of the artists as we explored the Marianne North gallery, a woman who travelled in 18th Century alone investigating the art of plants and she bought a piece of every part of the world with her in her gallery showing the true beauty of the world and Allah’s creations. Children explored all the unique trees and plants and saw The Hive, a structure built to look like a giant beehive. Luckily it didn’t rain till the end and the children were buzzing as we left the gardens!

Exploring London with Muslim History tours

Britain has a Muslim heritage dating back 1300 years. Muslim heritage is all around us evident in outstanding design and architecture, science, hidden gems, historical mosques and so much more! Our children have been studying the book ‘A walk in London’ by Salvatore  Rubino, which explores all of the historical landmarks of London and their wonderful and yet tragic stories behind each feature. As a Muslim school it was very important for our children to understand the history of the city they live in such as the London eye having 32 capsules to represent the 32 borough’s in London! It was also important for them to be aware of the Islamic stories and history that makes our great city so wonderful such as the first ever Mosque was a small house in Camden town and much more. This trip has made a huge impact on our children’s learning and development, staff and parents. Children saw sights like Tower bridge, Houses of Parliament, Tower of London and the epic changing of the guard parade in Buckingham.

Slime making in Year 3 and 4

Year 3 and 4 investigated what slime is and how to make it. The question was, is slime a liquid or a solid? They found that slime is a non-Newtonian liquid, which means that the viscosity, or resistance, of the liquid changes as you apply a stronger force. If you rest your hand on the surface of slime it will sink in, but if you smack it, the surface is solid. The class had an amazing time and this really stretched their scientific thinking.

Experiment a rocket‎ by KS1

This week in ‘Science Week’ our super scientists in year 1 & 2 have been learning all about Isaac Newton and Neil Armstrong’s discoveries. We have been learning about Neil Armstrong’s exploration to the moon. In science we have been learning about Isaac Newton’s discoveries and theories on his 3 laws of motion. The children made predictions about their experiment. We walked to the local park to launch our rockets. Children used empty fruit shoot bottles and mixed vinegar with baking soda and observed a movement which eventually reacted. The children had a great time making scientific discoveries.

Science week visitors – January 2019

We were really lucky to invite a midwife, an optician and an electrician who are all friends of the school to come in and share their journeys of how they came into their careers with the children. They brought in equipment and shared what science related  topics they needed to study for their jobs. The children asked many questions and were clearly inspired by our visitors. All 3 visitors highlighted the importance of getting a good education and making an impact in the community they live in.

Science Boffin show – January 2019

Our Science boffin Olly,  mesmerised the children with a fun filled science show that included  different experiments testing their observation skills. The children were amazed by seeing 3 small quantities of chemicals making such a huge amount of toothpaste fit enough for an elephant. The Bernoulli’s principle was shown, where a stream of air travelled with metres of loo roll, and was  flung across the room as the air carried it over the children. What a show!!

Year 1 and 2 trip to the London Aquarium

The Year 1 and 2 children went to an exciting trip to the London Aquarium, some of the children experienced being on a train for the first time and were very thrilled! Upon arrival the children had a workshop which cross curricular linked their science, geography and art topics. They also discussed the wonders of Allah’s creation by seeing sea life creatures who had various different exotic colours and design. The children really enjoyed this trip and a particular highlight was the penguins and star fish pond where the children were able to hold them!

Year 5 and 6 trip to The Metro Bank

Following from the workshops that the Year 5 and 6 children experienced  with the staff from Metro Bank, they were invited to visit the Cheapside branch in the City of London. The children got the opportunity to see inside a real vault and had a tour of the whole bank. They even got to meet Metro man and were gifted with many goodies!

Metro Bank with Year 5/6

The Metro bank ran workshops with our Year 5 and 6 children. They learnt about how the bank takes care of money and how to manage their own money e.g. through budgeting and saving.  The last workshop will be a visit to the bank where children will see the different kind of jobs that are done and see an actual vault where money and safety deposit boxes are held!

KS1 Shopping centre-Money week

For Maths week, our class made maths hats, explored various aspects of the wonders of Maths and focused on Money. We culminated the theme week with a usual ks1 epic style dramatic role play. The children created their own shopping centre. We role-played real life scenarios like lining up at the bank, saving money ,calculating profit, getting money from the bank and spending money. The children calculated their change and ‘bought’ various items. The shop owners bought their own toys and other household things from home to use in the role play. Well done to all the children who took part!

Year 3 and 4 Tuck shop

As part of year 3 and 4’s design and technology project, the children designed and made their own healthy sandwich snack. On Wednesday, we turned our classroom into a sandwich tuck shop and sold all the products to the rest of the school. We sold each sandwich for 20p and we managed to raise an amazing amount of £16!!!
